PINEHURST, NC The University of Houston Women’s Golf program takes its first step in the postseason when it tees off at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Pinehurst # 6 at Pinehurst Resort on Sunday morning.
The Cougars will play 18 holes each day through Tuesday. The Winner of the three-day, 54-hole tournament receives the league’s automatic bid to NCAA Regional play.
This will be the Cougars’ second appearance in The American Championships at Pinehurst # 6 at Pinehurst Resort. A year ago, Houston finished second with a score of 891, while First-Team All-American Karen Fredgaard finished third at 218.

MEET the COUGARS
Under the leadership of Carolyn Macow Leatherwood Head Coach Lydia Gummthe Cougars will be represented by senior Annie Kimsenior Ariana Saenzsenior Maria Jose Martinezsophomore Nicole Abelar and sophomore Delaney Martin.
This season, Kim has been the Cougars’ now consistent performer with a team-best 73.33 scoring average and 10 rounds of par or better, including four in the 60s. The Seoul native has enjoyed a pair of Top-10 finishes in 2021-22 and fired a career-low 67 in the Second Round of MountainView Collegiate on March 19.
Senior and four-year letterwinner Maria Jose Martinez will make her team-leading third appearance at The American Championships this weekend. The Alvarado, Mexico, native stands second on the team with a 74.67 average and six rounds of par or better.
While this is her first season with the Cougars, Abelar has enjoyed tremendous success at the Conference Championships in her Collegiate career. The sophomore transfer finished second at a rain-shortened Sun Belt Conference Championships with Coastal Carolina in 2021.
The Cougars will compete against student-athletes from Cincinnati, East Carolina, Memphis, SMU, South Florida, Tulane, Tulsa, no. 28 UCF and Wichita State.

HOUSTON in AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
This will be Houston’s eighth appearance at the American Athletic Conference Championships. The Cougars have finished among the Top-Three team leaders at the tournament every season in which it is eligible to compete in the winning Championships in 2019, 2018 and 2016.
Houston did not compete as a team at the 2014 American Championships, through NCAA rules, sending four student-athletes to play as individuals, while the 2020 Championships was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Leonie Harm is the only Cougar to win The American Championships individual title, posting a score of 8-under 208 at the 2019 event at the Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla.
In addition to Harm, Houston boasts 16 individual Top-10 finishes at The American Championships.
Following the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Cougars will learn their NCAA postseason Fate during the Selection Show, airing at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, on the Golf Channel.
Seventy-two teams and 12 individuals not on those teams will compete at six NCAA Regional sites across the Nation. Those Venues include Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, Calif.); Vanderbilt Legends Club (Franklin, Tenn.); The Championship Course at UNM (Albuquerque, NM); University of Michigan Golf Course (Ann Arbor, Mich.); Karsten Creek Golf Club (Stillwater, Okla.) And Seminole Legacy Golf Club (Tallahassee, Fla.).
