Crista Izuzquiza, Krista Junkkari and Kayla Smith each won both of their matches Sunday to lead the University of North Carolina Women’s golf team to victories over Duke and NC State at the NC State Match Play at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh.
Carolina is the No. 7 seed in the eight-team field and knocked off top-Seeded Duke, 4-1, and the No. 3 Wolfpack by the same 4-1 score.
“This was an outstanding day for Carolina Women’s golf to take down Duke and NC State on the same day,” says first-year UNC head Coach Aimee Neff. “It’s really special. I’m happy for our players for all the hard work they have put in. We won eight of our 10 matches and did so in convincing fashion. It’s encouraging to see the team’s development. Tomorrow, we get to contend for a Championship against an outstanding South Carolina team. I love where our program is at heading in a good direction. “
Natalia AseguinolazaIzuzquiza, Junkkari and Smith won their matches to defeat the Blue Devils in Sunday morning’s quarterfinals.
Aseguinolaza beat Rylie Heflin, 2 & 1. The match was tied through 12 holes before Aseguinolaza won the 13th and 16th holes to take the point.
Junkkari came out hot, winning six of the opening 11 holes in her match vs. Megan Fortney and held on for the 3 & 2 Victory.
Smith won the fourth, fifth and sixth holes in her match vs. Anne Chen. The lead was one through the 15th hole, but Smith won the 16th and halved the 17th to close out the match.
Izuzquiza lost two of the first three holes to Phoebe Brinker, but rallied to take the lead in her match with wins on the sixth, seventh and eighth holes. She went 2 up with a win on the 14thth hole and Secured the match by halving the final three holes.
In the afternoon, Izuzquiza, Junkkari and Smith won again and Nicole Adam also put a point on the board for the Tar Heels against the Wolfpack, which was playing on its home course.
Izuzquiza won the 11th12th and 13th holes to beat NC State’s Inja Fric, 4 & 3; Junkkari had a four-hole lead at the turn and beat Laura Olivares Leon, 3 & 2; Smith won three straight holes Midway through the match and defeated Isabel Amezcua, 2 & 1; and Adam won five of the first nine holes to Rout Natalie Ambruester, 6 & 5.
The Tar Heels will play second-seed and third-ranked South Carolina in the Championship match Monday beginning at 8:50 am The Gamecocks beat Notre Dame, 4-0-1, in the quarterfinals and Louisville, 4-1, in the semifinals .
