Srikanth, Sindhu & Malavika Bansod to play in second round

Thailand Open Badminton LIVE: India’s ace badminton stars PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth, along with Malavika Bansod are looking to seal a spot in the quarterfinals of the Thomas. All the three players made a winning start to their campaign as Srikanth defeated Brice Leverdez in three sets with a come-from-behind 18-21, 21-10, 21-16 victory. Sindhu too prevailed in a very close encounter that could have gone wither way as she won 19-21, 21-17, 18-21 against qualifier Lauren Lam. Malavika Bansod defeated Mariia Ulitina in three sets to enter the second round.

Srikanth will take on Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen in the second round, while Sindhu will be up against South Korea’s Sim Yu-jin. Malavika Bansod will face Denmark’s Line Christophersen.

Kidambi Srikanth vs Nhat Nguyen

Kidambi Srikanth, who is the eighth seeded player in the tournament is the only remaining Indian male singles player in the main draw of the tournament. He looks to win his first title this year. He will meet Ireland’s World No.42 Nhat Nguyen in the second round.

Nguyen started the year by reaching the quarterfinals at Indian Open. He then made it to the semifinals at Syed Modi International. In the recently concluded European Championships he bowed out in the quarterfinals after facing straight set defeat against Anders Antonsen. He has made it to the second round at Thailand after winning his first round match in straight sets against Denmark’s Hans Vittinghus.

This will be the fourth meeting between both the players with Srikanth leading the Head-to-Head record 2-1. They last met in the 2021 All England Championships with Nguyen winning the contest in three sets.

PV Sindhu [IND] vs Sim Yu-jin [KOR]

Sindhu, who is the sixth seed in the tournament looked lackluster in the first round. The contest could have gone either way but Sindhu managed to pull off a victory. She will look to put on a much better show in the second round against World No.46 Sim Yu-jin.

Yu-jin hasn’t had a great season so far as she faced first round exit in Korea Open. She was also ousted in the first round Korea Masters and in Asian Championships. She was in good form at the Uber Cup, winning all the four games that she played. She clinched an upset victory over a higher-ranked Sayaka Takahashi in the first round of Thailand Open.

This will be the second meeting between both the players. They last met at the 2021 Indonesia Open with Sindhu winning the game 14-21, 21-19, 21-14.

Malavika Bansod [IND] vs Line Chistophersen [DEN]

20-year-old Malavika Bansod sealed a spot in the main draw of the Thailand Open after playing the qualifiers. She defeated compatriot Anupama Upadhyaya in straight sets in the qualifier to enter the main draw. She then continued her form as she clinched a victory in three sets against Maria Ulitina in the first round. She will now face 22nd ranked Line Christophersen in the second round.

World No.57 Bansod started the year by reaching the quarterfinals at Indian Open. She then finished as runner-up at Syed Modi International after losing in straight sets against PV Sindhu. She then made a semifinal exit at Odisha Open. She made it to the second round at Korea Open where she lost to Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong in straight sets. She is now looking to enter the quarterfinals in the Super 500 tournament.

Meanwhile Christophersen’s best performance this year is a quarterfinal appearance at European Championships. This will be the first meeting between both the players.
