Spencer Jones overcomes injuries, stars again

As Spencer Jones readied to play the outfield for the first time in two years, he turned to the center fielder and admitted he was nervous. It was July 2021 and Jones was playing right field for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League after three springs of being limited by injuries.

“Don’t get shocked if, you know, whatever happens,” Jones said.

“Dude, just relax,” the center fielder responded. “Catch the ball. You’ve done that 100 times. “

After the first fly ball came his way with no issues, Jones felt the nerves melt away. At that point, he felt like he was finally back.

A top prospect since early in his high school days, the 6-foot-7 Jones was a top two-way player, seen as a potential first-round MLB draft pick in 2019 either on the mound or as a first baseman.
