Spartans in the middle of best win streak in 4 years

Just nine days ago, the Michigan State baseball team was struggling, sitting at 15-21 overall and 2-9 in the Big Ten.

But the season has drastically changed since, with six straight wins, including four consecutive conference victories.

A three-game home sweep of Minnesota over the weekend gave MSU the longest active win streak in the Big Ten – and it’s the best run for the Spartans in more than four years.

Suddenly, MSU’s season has a different feel.

Coach Jake Boss said the recent success centers on three factors. Solid pitching. Nearly mistake-free defense. And timely hitting.

“I think for the most part, we’ve swung the bat well, but even on the days we haven’t put up a big number of hits, we’ve gotten big hits when we needed them,” Boss said. “But the pitching and defense part of it has probably been the best, the most consistent. We’ve always said if we can stay consistent on the mound and make the routine (defensive) play, we have a chance.”
