Region championship win inspires young fans

After scoring the game-tying run against Powell in the bottom of the sixth inning, Farragut shortstop Lukas Buckner made a promise to the kids hanging over the fences near the dugout.

“I told them if I get if I get a hit and we get a run, I was like I will sign every single person ball,” he said.

The Central Florida commitment kept his word after crushing a walk-off RBI in the seventh inning to secure the Region 2-AAAA championship for Farragut (25-11-1) in a 6-5 victory on Wednesday night. He was surrounded after the game by a group of young fans, all clutching baseballs and asking for his autograph.

Young Farragut baseball fans wait for players to autograph their baseballs after the Admirals beat Powell 6-5 in the Region 2-4A championship game at Farragut on May 18, 2022.

The moment was surreal for Buckner, who remembers getting autographs and taking photos with his own Farragut baseball heroes as a kid: former Chicago White Sox player Nicky Delmonico, minor leaguer AJ Simcox and Vanderbilt standout Parker Noland.

“They were always there in those big moments, and you always want to be like those guys who were there in the big moments,” Buckner said. “It’s so crazy to be that now, I do not even know how to think about it. It’s really just now registering in the moment.”
