Play suspended with No. 11/13/15 Women’s Golf tied for fifth during day one of The Bruzzy

FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 11/13/15 Texas Women’s Golf team was tied for fifth-place in the overall team standings when play was suspended due to Darkness on the opening day of The Bruzzy at the Waterchase Golf Club. Six of the 14 teams in the field, including the Longhorns, had their second round suspended due to Darkness on Monday evening. Play will resume at 8 am CT on Tuesday morning, with the final round beginning shortly after with a shotgun start at 8:30 am CT. Texas will once again be paired with No. 21 Texas Tech and Oklahoma for the final round.

Sophomore Bentley Cotton is currently tied for 12th in the individual standings, sitting at one-under-par with just one hole left to play in her second round. Graduate Brigitte Thibault was one of three Longhorns to complete her second round as she stands in a tie for 19th place at two-over-par 146 (72-74). After struggling in the first round, freshman Bohyun Park bounced back by shooting two-under-par through 17 holes in her second round to put her in a tie for 26th place at three-over-par.

The Longhorns carded a six-over-par 294 during the first round to put them in fifth place tie at the conclusion of the opening round. Junior Sophie Guo, Brigitte Thibault and freshman Tiffany Cao helped pace the Longhorns in the opening round as each shot an even-par round of 72. Sitting at three-over-par through the opening 12 holes, Guo rallied by going three-under-par over the next six holes to close out her first round. In contrast, Thibault’s opening round of 72 was highlighted by a strong start and a two-under-par stretch over the first 12 holes of the tournament.

Cao, who is playing in the tournament as an individual, started off the day with an impressive eagle on her very first hole (No. 13, par-5). After an incredible opening drive, Cao hit the ball to within eight feet of the hole from 129 yards out with her second shot. The freshman proceeded to knock down the eagle putt to put her at two-under-par after just one hole. The round of 72 from Cao marks her first Collegiate round at par or better and the lowest round of her short Collegiate career. The Bruzzy also serves as Cao’s spring season debut, as well as her second Collegiate tournament overall.

In addition to the Longhorns (No. 11 in the latest WGCA Coaches Poll, released on March 25, 2022), the 14-team Bruzzy field includes: 6 Oklahoma State, No. 19 Baylor, no. 21 Texas Tech, Charlotte, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, host North Texas, Oklahoma, TCU, Tulane and Tulsa. Well. 19 Baylor leads the field through 36 holes at 20-under-par 556 (281-275), while Gurleen Kaur of Baylor leads the individual field at eight-under-par 136 (69-67).

The Lineup

  • Sophomore Bentley Cotton is tied for 12th in the individual standings at one-under-par. Cotton tallied a three-over-par 75 in Monday’s opening round and is four-under-par through 17 holes of her second round. Cotton posted two birdies (No. 4, par-4; No. 6, par-5) on the opening 18 holes. During the second round, Cotton recorded seven birdies (No. 13, par-5; No. 15, par-4; No. 17, par-4; No. 2, par-3; No. 3, par-5; No. 6, par-5; No. 7, par-3) before play was suspended.
  • Graduate Brigitte Thibault carded a two-over-par 146 (72-74) and is tied for 19th. The opening round of even-par 72 is Thibault’s third round at par or better on the season. Thibault recorded four birdies during the first round (No. 10, par-5; No. 13, par-5; No. 3, par-5; No. 6, par-5) and an additional six birdies on the second round (No. 13, par-5; No. 17, par-4; No. 18 par-5; No. 2, par-3; No. 5, par-4; No. 9, par-4).
  • Freshman Bohyun Park is tied for 26th place in the individual standings at three-over-par. Park shot a five-over-par 77 on the opening round and is two-under-par through 17 holes for her second round. Park registered two birdies during the first round (No. 13, par-5; No. 16, par-3) and four birdies on the second round (No. 12, par-3; No. 15, par-4; No 5, par-4; No. 7, par-3) before play was stopped.
  • Junior Sophie Guo is tied for 50th in the individual standings at seven-over-par. Guo shot an even-par 72 in the opening round and is seven-over par through her first 16 holes of her second round. Guo’s opening round of even-par 72 gives her six rounds at par or better on the 2021-22 season. Guo registered four birdies during her opening round (No. 11, par-4; No. 4, par-4; No. 6, par-5; No. 9, par-4). For the second round, Guo posted two birdies (No. 13, par-5; No. 4, par-4; No. 5, par-4) before play was suspended.
  • Sophomore Ashleigh Park fired a six-over-par 150 (75-75) and is tied for 44th. Park’s two rounds of 75 ties her lowest round on the season. Park tallied one birdie (No. 10, par-5) in her first round, while adding an additional two birdies in her second round (No. 12, par-3; No. 18, par-5).
  • Freshman Tiffany Cao shot a five-over-par 149 (72-77) in her spring season debut and is tied for 38th in the individual standings. Cao registered an eagle on her very first hole (No. 13, par-5) and three birdies during the first round (No. 16, par-3; No. 5, par-4; No. 7, par-3) . On the second round, Cao recorded four birdies (No. 13, par-5; No. 4, par-4; No. 5, par-4; No. 6, par-5).
