A 57-year-old man died when he was hit by a truck on West Hastings in the Downtown Eastside early Monday.

Vancouver police say the man was struck and killed by an eastbound transport truck near Carrall Street around 10am

The driver stayed and is being co-operative. “It’s believed the pedestrian was jaywalking when the collision occurred,” said VPD spokesman Sgt. Steve Addison.

It was the city’s fourth fatal pedestrian collision of the year.

On Vancouver Island, police are investigating a hit-and-run collision that left a cyclist in hospital with serious injuries.

Oceanside RCMP say a man in his 30s was riding on the Inland Island Highway about two miles south of the Parksville exit when he was hit by a northbound vehicle just before 5 pm Sunday.

“The vehicle and its driver fled the scene northbound, leaving the cyclist with serious injuries,” said RCMP Cpl. Mike Halskov.

The cyclist was airlifted to hospital and remains in serious condition.

Anyone with dashcam footage or who witnessed the crash is asked to call the BC Highway Patrol in Parksville at 250-954-2953.
