Navy Set to Host the 2022 Patriot League Women’s Golf Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy Women’s golf team (1-0) is set to return to action Friday in pursuit of its second-straight Patriot League title as it hosts the 2022 Patriot League Women’s Golf Championship at the USNA Golf Club. The tournament will feature 18-hole rounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with competition beginning at 8:30 am each day.

The Winner of the event receives an automatic bid for one of the six NCAA Regionals (Stanford Golf Club in Stanford, Calif .; Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn .; The Championship Course at UNM in Albuquerque, NM; University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich .; Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla .; Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.) that will be played May 9-11. If the individual medalist is not part of the Championship team, she too will qualify for the NCAA Regionals.

12 teams and six individuals will be featured at each regional site, with those who make it out of the regional advancing to the national championship that will be played at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. from May 20-25.

This weekend’s Patriot League Championship will mark the Mids ninth appearance in the tournament, along with being their first as reigning Champions. The Navy won the 2021 Patriot League Championship after posting a three-round score of 57-over par 921, including firing a Sunday low round of 17-over par 305 to clinch the Victory. In addition to their aforementioned Championship last season, the Mids have been placed in the top-three teams on the Championship field four times.


Navy has played in nine tournaments this season, posting an average score of 22-over for 308.8 which ranks as the third-best annual average in team history. Leading the way in that effort for the Midshipmen is Mara Hirtle (So., Pinehurst, NC) with a per round average of 76.7. The sophomore also leads the team this season in top-five finishes (3) and rounds to par (2).

Stephanie Lee (So., Southlake, Texas) is second behind Hirtle in the round average at 77.7, along with having four top-10 finishes this season. Rounding out the top three performers for the Mids this season is Eve Worden (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) With an average score of 77.8 which includes two top-10 finishes.

Four members of the starting lineup from the 2021 Patriot League Championship team return to be part of this season’s starting six, including Hirtle, Lee, Worden and Tori Smith (Sr., Arlington, Tenn.). Hirtle and Lee led the way for the Mids at the event by each posting a 14-over par 230.


The Patriot League Women’s Golf Championship is set to be played at the Naval Academy Golf Club for the third time, matching the Saucon Valley Country Club (Lehigh) for the most-played course in the history of the event. The tournament was last played in Annapolis during the 2018 season, with Richmond posting a 943 en route to clinching its third-consecutive Patriot League title. Navy finished second at the 2018 league Championship, posting a 946 over the two-day event.
