MW Announces 2021-22 Women’s Golf All-Conference Teams and Individual Awards

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Mountain West announced its 2021-22 Women’s Golf All-Conference teams, as well as MW Women’s Golfer of the Year, MW Women’s Golf Freshman of the Year and MW Women’s Golf Coach of the Year, as voted on by the league’s nine heads coaches.

San Jose State senior Natasha Andrea Oon was named MW Women’s Golfer of the Year, while teammate Lucia Lopez Ortega earned MW Women’s Golf Freshman of the Year Honors. Dana Dormannwho led San Jose State to its first MW Championship, was selected as the MW Women’s Golf Coach of the Year.

The Spartans have swept the three individual Awards for the second time in four years (2018-19).

Oon, who was also named MW Women’s Golfer of the Year after the 2019-20 season and the 2018-19 MW Women’s Golf Freshman of the Year, competed in nine tournaments, averaging 70.81 strokes per round. This season, the native of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, recorded five top-five finishes and eight top-10 placements. He has earned the MW Women’s Golf Championship medalist honors at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course in Rancho Mirage, California, while setting Championship records with the lowest 54-hole score (206) and largest winning margin (seven strokes). Oon is currently ranked the No. 4 golfer nationally according to Golfstat.

He is just the fourth MW golfer to earn three major individual honors in a career, joining Kailin Downs (New Mexico), Jodi Ewart (New Mexico) and Dana Finkelstein (UNLV).

Lopez Ortega becomes just the second Spartan to earn the MW Women’s Golf Freshman of the Year award, joining Oon (2018-19). The native of Sa Coma, Mallorca, Spain, recorded three top-five finishes, including a runner up at the 2022 MW Women’s Golf Championship. Lopez-Ortega averaged 73.00 strokes per round, the lowest among MW freshmen golfers.

Dormann earned Coach of the year honors after leading San Jose State to a No. 5 national ranking according to Golfstat and a team title at the 2022 MW Women’s Golf Championship. Overall, the Spartans won four tournaments this season and are the top-seed at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional. This is the second time Dormann has won the Coach of the Year award and the first time since 2018-19.

Oon and Lopez Ortega also earned first-team all-MW honors and are joined by teammates Antonia Malate and Kajsa Arwefjall and San Diego State’s Sara Kjellker.

The 2021-22 Spartans are just the fifth team in Mountain West history to place four players on the first team, joining UNLV in 2005-06 and New Mexico in 2003-04, 2002-03 and 2001-02, but the first to accomplish the feature since the league switched to two five-golfer teams in 2012-13.

Nevada’s Victoria GaileySan Diego State’s Bernice Olivarez Ilas and UNLV’s Nicole Lorup, Veronica Joels and Kendall Todd were second-team honorees.
