Mountain Time Arts, in partnership with Intermountain Opera Bozeman, has announced two evenings of Classical performance set for August 24-25, 2022 at All Nations Teepee Village in Madison Junction, WY.
The concert is part of the Yellowstone Revealed, a series of place-based projects by an inter-tribal group of Indigenous artists and scholars. The series runs from August 23-27, 2022.
The performance will feature Indigenous opera singers soprano Kirsten C. Kunkle (Myskoke), mezzo-soprano Kate Morton (Cherokee). Accompanying the vocalists will be Intermountain Opera Bozeman’s Artistic Director Michael Sakir will accompany Kunkle and Sapphire Ferguson-Jetty (Dakota and Chippewa) will perform Métis fiddle music on both nights.
Kunkle will give the world premiere of “Reclaim the Land,” an art song commissioned specifically for Yellowstone Revealed. The song focuses on the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and Yellowstone.
Both nights will also feature the US Premiere of “Fire” by Ian Cusson (Métis). Cusson’s piece speaks to the “interconnectedness of nature, strength of women, and Voices of mountains.”
Yellowstone Revealed’s upcoming public artworks are non-invasive and temporary and designed to demonstrate the historic and continued presence of Indigenous People in the Yellowstone region. The series coincides with Yellowstone’s 150th anniversary, and seeks to advance Indigenous Truths and perspectives.
