Men’s Golf in Fifth After the First Day of the WAC Championships

BOULDER CITY, Nev. The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s golf team sits in fifth place after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships on Friday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

The Vaqueros opened with a first round 293 as they sit just four shots back from New Mexico State for second place and nine shots back from Sam Houston, who holds the lead after a first round 284.

Freshman Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque led the way for the Vaqueros as he opened with a one-under par 71. Bethencourt Duque is tied for seventh place and is three shots back of Abilene Christian’s Alex Clouse who posted a four-under 68 for the first round lead.

Senior Tennoshin Ogawa carded an opening round even par 72 as he is tied for 11th. Sophomore Taj Sutherland is one shot back from Ogawa after posting a first round one-over par 73 as he is tied for 20th.

Sophomores Leonardo Novella and Sebastian Lundberg are tied for 39th after both posted first rounds of 77.

The Vaqueros will be back on the course on Saturday for the second round of the WAC Championships with the first group teeing off at 9:30 am
