Men’s Golf Advances to GLVC Semis

INDIANAPOLIS—Led by individual runner-up Oliver Mast (-5), the UIndy men’s golf team punched its ticket to the conference semifinals at the 2022 GLVC Championships. The Greyhounds wrapped up stroke play with a three-under 285 to secure the No. 2 seed heading into Sunday’s semifinal.

The three-day tournament is being held at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis.

The Hounds’ team score on Saturday matched the lowest total by any team during the 54 holes of stroke play. UIndy is the only school to qualify for medal / match play in every season since the conference adopted the format in 2012.

UIndy is set to face third-Seeded Southern Indiana in one of two morning semifinals Sunday. The Hoosier State rivals will tee off from hole no. 10, while top-Seeded Missouri-St. Louis and four-seed McKendree will start at hole no. 1. Tee times are currently TBD as frost is likely to come into play in the morning hours.

Individually, Mast went on a tear Saturday, nearly forcing a playoff for the league’s individual medal. Last year’s GLVC Player of the Year carded a 68 in the final round of stroke play, including birdies on 17 and 18 to settle just one stroke back from UMSL’s Joel Sylven.

With his top-five finish good for All-GLVC honors, Mast has now paced the UIndy lineup in each of the last three conference tournaments, including three top-three showings.

Senior Jacob Nickell (+1) came just short of All-GLVC status. Putting together one of his most-consistent tournaments in his GLVC Championships debut, the Wheeling, WV, native was one of five individuals to finish at one over two strokes back of the top five.

The final three Greyhounds finished within one stroke of each other. Senior Keegan Bronnenberg had a strong stroke-play finish, carding a two-under 70 on Saturday to vault 16 spots into a tie for 20th. Cam Carroll matched KB’s +8 score, while CJ Jones shared 24th place at +9.

FRIDAY
The Hounds found themselves in an enviable position after day 1 of the 2022 GLVC Championships. Tied for third place through 36 holes, the Greyhounds (+11) look to remain in the top-four spot after Saturday’s final round of stroke play to advance the medal / match play semifinals on Sunday.

Fifth-year senior Oliver Mast leads to way for UIndy. The reigning GLVC Player of the Year carded rounds of 71 and 72 Friday to sit at -1, good for a share of fourth place. He currently sits six back from leader Joel Sylven of UMSL and just two back from second.

Senior Jacob Nickell (72-73), playing in his first GLVC Championships, is in ninth place at +1. Cam Carroll (+5) is tied for 17th, CJ Jones (+6) is tied for 22nd, and Keegan Bronnenberg (+10) in 36th.

Missouri-St. Louis authored a great opening day, topping the team Leaderboard at -5. McKendree sits in second at +6, while Missouri S&T is tied for third with UIndy at +11. Southern Indiana sits at +17 and is looking to climb out of the fifth-place spot.
