ESTERO, Fla. – For a second consecutive year, the Drexel University men’s basketball team will challenge itself with an in-season tournament against some of the best mid-major schools when it competes at the Gulf Coast Showcase, November 21-23 at Hertz Arena.
“We are excited to be a part of the Gulf Coast Showcase this season,” said head Coach Zach Spiker. “We know the field is loaded with great mid-major programs. We look forward to being able to compete against potential postseason tournament teams from several high level conferences.”
The Dragons are slated to play three games in the showcase, beginning with the University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks from the Sun Belt Conference on Monday, November 21 at 5:00 pm EST. From there, Drexel will then face either Northern Kentucky or Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday, November 22. Last season, NKU won 20 games and advanced to the Horizon League Championship game, coming within 10 seconds of the title. FCGU is coming off a 22-12 season, competing in both the A-SUN tournament and The Basketball Classic.
Also competing in the tournament and making up the other half of the bracket are Toledo (Mid-American Conference), Kansas City (Summit League), East Carolina (American Athletic Conference), and Indiana State (Missouri Valley Conference).
The Championship game of the event is scheduled for Wednesday, November 23 at 7:30 pm
The Gulf Coast Showcase has often served as a springboard for success as four of the previous eight winners have gone on to 20 or more victories in their Championship season with three advancing to the NIT.
