BIG EAST Championship Results
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – UConn sophomore Caleb Manuel earned a bid to the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals Wednesday as the individual co-champion at the BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship on the Mountain View Course at Calloway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga.
Manuel (Topsham, Me.) Shot a 1-under on 71 in Wednesday’s final round, giving him an outstanding 11-under, 68-66-71 = 205 for the 54-hole tourney, which included 50 players from the league’s 10 teams .
Seton Hall grad student Gregor Tait fired an impressive 7-under 65 on Wednesday to shoot 70-70-65 = 205 for the tourney and tie Manuel at the top of the Leaderboard to earn co-medalist honors. Manuel won the playoffs for the automatic NCAA bid by Concession and will be playing in next week’s NCAA Regionals as an individual.
“I couldn’t be more proud of Caleb,” UConn Coach Dave Pezzino said. “In my opinion, they’ve been one of the top golfers in the league all year and they showed it once again this week. It’s an Honor to have him advance and represent UConn and the BIG EAST in the NCAA Regional play.”
Seton Hall recorded the best team round of the tournament on Wednesday, an aggregate of 10-under 278, to finish with a 15-under, 288-283-278 = 849 to Capture the team Championship and earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals . Marquette finished second with a 12-under, 281-289-282 = 852, while UConn captured third place with a 4-under, 287-283-290 = 860.
Behind UConn in fourth place was Creighton (869), followed by Georgetown (875), St. John’s (879), Xavier (884), Villanova (885), DePaul (894) and Butler (906).
Manuel is the first UConn player to earn medal honors at the BIG EAST Championship since Brian Ahern in 1994. He finished fourth as a freshman in last year’s BIG EAST tourney.
The UConn sophomore engaged in a dogfight with Seton Hall’s hard-charging Tait throughout the back nine on Wednesday. Tait actually grabbed the lead by a stroke with a birdie on the 18thth hole, but Manuel recorded a crucial birdie on the Par 5 16th hole and then parred No. 17 and 18 to end in a tie.
The winning duo led the tournament in Par 4 scoring (-5) and they tied for second in Par 5 scoring (-6). Tait led the tourney with 16 birdies, while Manuel was second with 15.
It is Manuel’s second medalist finish of the season (also at the UConn Invitational) and his eighth Top 10 finish of the year. He upped his total of par-or-better rounds to 19, with 14 sub-70 rounds.
The Huskies also had a top 15 finish by sophomore Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.), Who finished in a tie for 13th with a 1-over, 72-70-75 = 217, upping his par-or-better total to 15 and his Top 20 finishes to six.
Sophomore Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.) Had his second Top 20 finish with a tie for 17th after shooting a 2-over, 72-72-74 = 218, with par-or-better rounds at five.
Senior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) Had UConn’s best round of the day Wednesday with a 2-under 70, his 13th round of par-or-better this season, leaving him in a tie for 24th with a tourney total of 5-over, 75-76 = 70 = 221. Freshman Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.) Finished in a tie for 39th with an 11-over, 77-75-75 = 227.
Manuel will play at one of six sites in the NCAA Regional on May 15-18 – The Course at Yale (New Haven, Conn.), Traditions Club (College Station, Texas), PGA National Resort – Champions Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), The Reserve at Spanos Park (Stockton, Calif.), Ol ‘Colony Golf Complex (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) Or OSU Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio).
