The Kentucky basketball team begins its 2022-23 season Wednesday evening nearly 1,000 miles from Rupp Arena with an exhibition game against the Dominican Republic National Select Team in the Bahamas.
The Wildcats and the Dominicans are scheduled to tip off at 7 pm (SEC Network) inside a converted Ballroom at the Baha Mar Resort in Nassau. Wednesday’s exhibition is the first of UK’s four-game Caribbean slate, which continues Thursday night against Mexico’s Tec De Monterrey.
John Calipari will not coach the team during the trip, according to UK Athletics. Assistant Orlando Antigua will instead serve as acting head Coach Wednesday night, and fellow staffers Chin Coleman, Bruiser Flint and KT Turner will get their shots in the games to come.
There will be plenty to learn during the trip about how reigning Naismith Player of the Year Oscar Tshiebwe and company are coming together as the Wildcats look to bounce back from last season’s first-ever NCAA Tournament exit.
Wednesday’s game will be the first for Iowa transfer CJ Fredrick, who is coming off a hamstring injury that sidelined him for UK’s entire 2021-22 season. During the Wildcats’ practice Tuesday, Kyle Tucker of The Athletic reported Fredrick was the top-performing guard in a five-minute, 3-point shooting drill and at one point made 15 consecutive shots from deep.
