Lee Men Win Gulf South Golf Championship

It was a historic for the No. 3 Lee’s golf team as it rolled to dominate the 18-stroke Victory over the field to Capture the program’s first Gulf South Conference Championship from the picturesque Magnolia Grove Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.

As a team the Flames shot a sizzling 19-under 845 total. Beck Burnette and Oliver Lewis-Perkins led the way for the Flames and tied for second with a 4-under 212 total. Burnette carded rounds of 72, 69, and 71. Lewis-Perkins fired a 68 in today’s final round after shooting 71 and 73 yesterday.

Connor Pollman fired a 4-under 68 in round one to help the Flames get off to a good start and followed it up with a 71 and 74.

Freshman Dalton Chuba birded four of the first six holes and tied for the low round of the day with a 5-under 67 to finish tied for fifth. Dustin DeMersseman tied for 18th with a 71, 72 and 78 for a 221 total.

“This one feels good after a lot of close calls over the years,” said Lee Maupin, Director of Golf at Lee. “I just really proud of how our guys came out these last two days and took care of business. Beck was steady for us all three rounds, Connor really helped get us going in round one Yesterday and Dalton and Ollie went low today to extend the lead. Dustin was 1-under over 36 Yesterday, so everyone contributed to this win, and we are certainly going to enjoy it. ”

West Florida finished in second with an 863 as Elias Haavisto took home his second straight medalist title for the Argonauts with a 75, 64, 78, 212 total. West Georgia claimed third at 874, Christian Brothers placed fourth at 881 and Shorter rounded out the top five with an 882.

“I’m so proud of these guys,” Pollman said. “This was a goal of Ours coming into the year was to win this tournament and I’m glad I could help play a part in this. It’s a great feeling. ”

Burnette added, “this is a special team and I love these guys and feel like we’ve got a pretty special season going. Our coaches are great, Coach Maupin, Coach Spence, they really care about us, and they really wanted this for us. It’s easy to play for guys you know care so much. This was a great day for Lee golf and we look forward to try and keep it rolling at the regionals again. ”

The Flames will now look to repeat as South Region Champions after winning the program’s first regional title last season and advancing all the way to match play at the National Tournament. The South Region Championship will be held at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga. on May 3-5.
