HOWELL – A year ago, CBA’s Ethan Lee opened the boys’ golf season with victories at the Monmouth County and Shore Conference Tournaments.
The Colts’ senior standout was at it again Wednesday.
Fresh off a second-place finish at last week’s Garden State Cup, featuring the state’s top teams, Lee successfully defended his title at the Monmouth County Tournament, firing a 1-under-par 71 at Howell Park Golf Course.
Lee’s total was two shots better than a year ago when he won the title in a playoff. This time they finished a shot clear of Wall junior Alex Menges. Wall sophomore Pat Scenna, who won last week’s Wall Invitational, was third at 74.
CBA emerged as a team Champions with a total of 298, with Wall finishing second at 310, five shots clear of third-place Howell.
Rounding out the scoring for the CBA was Wyatt Slagle at 75, while Evan Sorensen and Brian Mastrorilli shot 76.
Lee was tied for the lead with Scenna after 10 holes, before Lee grabbed a lead they would never relinquish with an eagle on the par-5, 11th hole. But Merges, playing in the group behind Lee, did pull into a tie for the top spot with a birdie on the par-4, 16th hole.
But Lee took a one-shot lead to secure the win with a par on No. 17.
Lee will now look to defend his title at the Shore Conference Tournament on April 27.
Brick’s Nahrwold takes OCT boys’ title
A year ago, Brick’s Derek Nahrwold began his junior season with a Victory at the Wall Invitational. And he’s off to a quick start for the Green Dragons again.
Nahrwold emerged victorious at Monday’s Ocean County Tournament Monday at Seaview Golf Club in Galloway Township. Nahrwold posted an 8-over-par 79 in difficult conditions, and then was named the Champion on a match of cards with Donovan Catholic’s Emilio Farina.
Pinelands’ Brandon Tyhanic and Alex Henbest of Southern finished tied for third at 80.
Farina, who finished fourth a year ago, helped the Griffins repeat as team Champions, finishing with a total of 343. Southern finished second at 355, while Brick was third at 369.
Clement repeats as OCT girls’ champ
Battling through cool, windy conditions at Seaview, Pinelands’ Grace Clement won her second straight Ocean County Tournament title Monday.
Clement, a senior, finished seven shots clear of Southern senior Mary Kate Reilly, who finished second in 2021 as well, and has three top-10 finishes in the event during her career. Lacey’s Madison Zrinski placed third with a 102.
It was Barnegat Emerging as the team Champion with a four-player total of 439, one shot better than Southern, with Central placing third at 463. Leading the way for Barnegat was Yazzi Muhammad, who finished fourth with a 102, while teammate Kiera Pokiluda was sixth at 106, and Olivia Miaschi placed eighth with a 108.
Clement leads the Ocean County contingent into the Shore Conference Tournament, set for May 25 at Jumping Brook in Neptune. Clement finished eighth at last year’s SCT.
