El Paso districts crown Champions in UIL district golf tournaments
The El Dorado girls and Bel Air boys golf teams won the District 2-5A team titles on Friday.
Bel Air won with a two-day total of 719. Jayson Smith and Drew Dibler were the top two Highlanders. Smith finished third with a 173 and Dibler was fourth with a 178. Hanks’ Abraham Medina won the individual title with a 160, eight shots ahead of his teammate, Noah Garcia.
El Dorado won his team championship with a team score of 816 and was led by Zoe Munoz and Skylar Mateo. Munoz won the individual Championship with a two-day total of 160 and Mateo was third with a 192.
For the Aztecs it was their first district championship in girls golf.
District 1-5A
The El Paso High boys program won its seventh straight district championship. The Tigers shot a 343 on the first day and a 332 on the second day.
Senior Richard Posthuma won his first individual title with a two-day total of 160. He shot a 74 in Tuesday’s second round at Underwood Golf Course.
“My putting was strong and I played consistent,” Posthuma said. “I was able to focus and took it just one hole a time. I haven’t been playing golf for very long. I started playing the sport when I was a sophomore. I’ve been fortunate to have great coaches to learn from and golf has allowed me to grow and be successful. It’s been a fun sport to be around and our program has been successful. It’s full of great people. “
On the girls side, Burges took top honors with an 829 team total. Senior Austin Lopez won her second straight individual district title, shooting a 91 and a 78 over both days.
“This is a sport I’ve put in a lot of time since I started playing in middle school,” Lopez said. “I’ve been able to grow as a teammate, leader and player through the past several years. Here at Burges, we have a great group of players and great teammates. We’ve all worked hard to accomplish winning this Championship and the work paid off for us. “
District 1-4A
The Clint boys and Mountain View girls teams won the district Championships.
Clint won with a two-day total of 856 and was led by Julian Sosa, who finished second with a 206. Riverside’s Gerardo Garcia won the individual title with a 201.
Mountain View won the girls title with a team score of 1,031. Emily Alvarado led the way with a two-day total of 237, which was good for a second. Clint’s Sarah Rosales won the individual title with a 233.
