Community Calendar: Tech and Coffee, Finlandia Beach Laskiainen Festival and more – Cloquet Pine Journal

Tech & Coffee, 9-11 am, Chickadee Coffeehouse & Deli, Barnum. Barnum Community Education hosts the free event. Community members can drop in to get help with their cell phones, e-readers, tablets, laptops, social media platforms and more. Community education staff and Nathan Rimolde from RTS will be on hand to answer questions.

Snack Chat, 3: 30-5: 30 p.m., Cloquet Public Library. REACH sponsors the weekly event for kids. Participants will make a snack and chat with others while they eat.

“Zero Waste Kids” Author’s Visit, 5: 30-8 p.m., Cloquet Public Library. April Hepokoski of Esko and Ashland native Rob Greenfield will participate in a book signing and Q&A session on their book “Zero Waste Kids: Hands-On Projects and Activities to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.” Participants can register at https://bit.ly/3oS6tiS.

Medical Benefit for Vicki Homstad, 4-7 p.m., Cloquet VFW. A fundraiser will be held for Vicki Homstad, who was diagnosed in May 2021 with end stage renal disease and is undergoing 10 hours of dialysis each night. Homstad is not eligible for pancreas and kidney transplants unless her heart function improves. She and her doctors are working to make that happen, but Homstad had to leave her career early to focus on her health. Friends and family organized a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and 50/50 raffle to lessen the burden on Homstad and her family. The cost is $ 10 for adults and $ 5 for kids 12 years and under.

Finlandia Beach Laskiainen Festival, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Cloquet Armory. Pea soup dinner (hernekeitto), sloppy Joes, drawings, cherry bowl, raffle and live music. Tickets $ 10 for adults, $ 5 for ages 6-12 and free for 5 and under.

Teen Reads, 4 p.m., Cloquet Public Library. The library’s teen librarian will read aloud chapters from a current book. Snacks are provided.

Cromwell Area Young Old Timers (YOT), noon, Cromwell Park Pavilion. The Cromwell Area Young Old Timers will meet for the first time this year with officers supplying lunch this month. Members can sign up to serve for the following months. YOT meets on the second Tuesday of the month and new members are always welcome to join.

Digital Wellness for Teens, Tweens and Caregivers, 6-7: 30 p.m., Cloquet Public Library. The Carlton County Youth Collaborative will discuss digital wellness. Caregivers can attend with their child or come alone. A light meal will be served and child care will be provided for younger siblings or family members.

Carlton County Trailblazers 55 and Older Group (formerly the Retired Men’s Group), 11 am, Cloquet VFW. The Carlton County Trailblazers 55 and Older Group invites men and women age 55 and older to their next luncheon meeting. The social hour will start at 11 am, followed by a meal at noon. The menu will be corned beef and cabbage for $ 10 per person. The guest speaker will be the Cloquet Human Development Center to speak about the services they provide. Members of the public are welcome.

Tinker Kids, 3: 30-5 p.m., Cloquet Public Library. The Cloquet Public Library will host the after-school program Tinker Kids, where students can make a Dancing Shamrock Man. Families can drop in anytime during the 90 minute session and can stay as long as they like. The activity is geared toward school-age children, but all are welcome. Light snacks will be provided.

Cromwell Area Community Club, 6 p.m., Cromwell Park Pavilion. The group will be discussing upcoming events. New members are welcome for only $ 10 per year. Those who want to learn more but don’t know if they want to join can sit in on a meeting and then decide. Members who haven’t paid their dues yet can bring them to the meeting or mail them to CACC, PO Box 190, Cromwell, MN 55726.

Mojakka Cook-Off, noon to 4:30 pm, Northeastern Hotel, Cloquet. The Carlton County Historical Society will hold its 16th annual mojakka cook-off. Attendees can taste 10-20 Finnish mojakka soups (beef, fish or vegetable). Bread and coffee will be provided. The cost is $ 9 at the door or $ 8 in advance. Those interested in entering mojakka can pick up an entry form at the Northeastern Hotel, or call 218-879-9968, 218-879-3312 or 218-393-0657. There is no fee to enter the contest.

Chair Yoga for all, 10-10: 45 am, Cloquet Public Library. Carolyn Ripp of Nest Wellness Studio will lead a free session of Chair Yoga, which can increase flexibility, improve core strength and balance and reduce stress and pain. It can be beneficial for anyone who has desk work or tends to sit for long periods of time. Participants should dress in comfortable clothing. No previous experience is needed.

Craft fair, 9 am to 5 pm, Cloquet Armory. Crafts and other goods, including food, will be available for purchase from area makers and vendors.

Grief Support Group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 7-8:30 pm in the Pine Room at Community Memorial Hospital.
