Cooper Hjerpe retired the first 18 batters he faced but Utah managed to score two in the seventh as No. 2 Oregon State dropped a 2-1 decision to the Utes Friday at Smith’s Ballpark. Hjerpe struck out nine in seven innings, scattering three hits and two runs. He was, however, saddled with the loss after Utah scored on a double by Landon Frei and single by Jayden Kiernan in the seventh. Oregon State scored its lone run of the game in the sixth. Justin Boyd tripled to open the inning, and scored when Garret Forrester hit a sacrifice fly to center.

Oregon State Notes
Wade Meckler extended his hit streak to 10 games with a 1-for-4 effort against Utah Friday. He has 20 hits with eight doubles and two home runs during the streak.
• Meckler has also reached base safely in all 41 games this season. He is the only player in the Pac-12 to reach in every one of his games.
Garret Forrester went 2-for-2 to extend his hit streak to a season-long nine games.
• He has pushed his batting average to .346 from .314 at the outset of the streak.
Cooper Hjerpe’s loss Friday was just the third by an OSU starter this season, and the first in a weekend series.
• OSU’s starters are 16-3 this season, posting 208 strikeouts to 42 walks in 189 innings.
• OSU’s pitching staff did not issue a walk Friday for the sixth time this season.
Ben Ferrer, who pitched one inning Friday, has now gone 10 2/3 innings – four appearances – without allowing a run. He has 13 strikeouts with two hits and no walks allowed over that stretch.
• OSU is 7-5 in one-run games this season.
Jacob Kmatz, Saturday’s probable starter, is 4-0 with a 2.55 ERA in five games away from home this season. He has 16 walks to three strikeouts in 24 2/3 innings.
• Saturday marks the Beavers’ final game in April; the Beavers are 13-4 in their first 17.
• It marks the third consecutive full season the Beavers will end the month at 18 games played.
• The two runs allowed Friday lowered OSU’s team Pac-12 only ERA to 3.08. Opponents are batting just .208 in conference play.
• The pitching staff’s WHIP during conference play is 0.99.
