Badminton: Kian Meng’s Korean Open success starts to rub off on Wee Kiong

PETALING JAYA: Tan Kian Meng is on a roll.

Fresh from capturing the Korean Open title with Lai Pei Jing, Kian Meng teamed up with veteran Tan Wee Kiong in the men’s doubles to upset upcoming Indonesian youngsters Pramudya Kusumawardana-Yeremia Rambitan 21-11, 16-21, 22-20 in the opening round of the Korean Masters in Gwangju City yesterday.

The Malaysians needed 48 minutes to oust the World No. 21 Indonesians.

This was the biggest win so far for Kian Meng-Wee Kiong, who are ranked 77th in the world, since they started playing together in October last year.

“Kian Meng and I played a better combination game after several matches before this. I think winning the Korean Open title gave Kian Meng more confidence, ”said Wee Kiong.

Kian Meng-Wee Kiong will next take on home pair Choi Solgyu-Kim Wonho for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Korean pair defeated compatriots Yong Jin-Na Sung-seung 21-19, 21-11 in 37 minutes.

Malaysia will have another representative in the men’s doubles second round today after Goh V Shem-Low Juan Shen received a walkover earlier from India’s Krishna Garaga-Vishnuvardhan Panjala.

The Malaysian pair will play Japan’s Hiroki Okamura-Masayuki-Onedara.

Another independent pair Nur Azriyn Ayub-Lim Khim Wah, however, did not make it to the next round after falling to homesters Gwang Min-na-Jin Seong-noh 19-21, 18-21.

In the mixed doubles, world no. 13 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie swept aside home pair Wang Chan-Jung Kyung-eun 21-12, 21-12 in just 27 minutes.

They should have equally little trouble in beating Israel’s Misha Zilberman-Svetlana Zilberman in the second round.

In other results, Chong Hon Jian-Yap Cheng Wen found China’s Ou Xuanyi-Huang Yaqiong too hot to handle and went down 16-21, 5-21.

Meanwhile, world no. 67 men’s singles player Cheam June Wei blew another opportunity to reach the latter stages of a tournament when he shockingly lost to 995th ranked homester Jeon Hyeok-jin 11-21, 11-21 in 35 minutes.

Fellow independent men’s singles shuttler Soong Joo Ven will try to keep Malaysia’s hopes alive in the event when he goes up against another homester Heo Kwang-hee today.

In woman’s singles, Goh Jin Wei will face China’s Wang Zhiyi while in the mixed doubles, Chan Peng Soon-Toh Ee Wei will take on Chinese pair Zheng Siwei-Zhang Shuxian.
