Badminton Association of India awards cash prizes to Thomas Cup-winning contingent

Indian men’s badminton team recently bagged the Thomas Cup title for the first time in the 73-year history of the world’s most prestigious badminton men’s team championship by thrashing 14-time champions Indonesia in Bangkok. Soon after the players arrived back home, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) handed a cash prize to the Indian contingent.
BAI President Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the Indian team on this historic achievement as BAI General Secretary Sanjay Mishra alongside other BAI officials and chief national coach Pullela Gopichand were present on the occasion. BAI also handed over a cash prize of INR one crore to the Indian team and INR 20 lakh to the support staff.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had invited the Indian contingent to his residence where he met all the players. “# ThomasUberCup2022 team had the honor of meeting Hon. PM Sh. Arenarendramodi at his residence, where they had a memorable time. Team was accompanied by Dronacharya Awardees #PullelaGopichand @vimalkumar_u doubles coach @mathiasboe along with other coaches & support staff,” BAI had tweeted.

On their way to the final, India defeated powerhouses in Malaysia and Denmark. The final was a thriller where Lakshya Sen gave India a 1-0 lead after which the doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty saved four match points before Kidambi Srikanth won the second singles game to give India a sensation 3-0 win.

Sen gifted the PM Almora’s famous ‘bal mithai’ after he expressed his interest about the sweets. “The PM asked for Almora’s bal mithai and I got it for him. It is touching that he remembers small things about players,” Sen said. We feel very motivated whenever you meet us, interact with us. I hope I keep winning medals for India, keep meeting you, and keep getting bal mithai for you, “the youngster said while recalling his interaction.
