Alabama’s Claycomb, Ponder Earn Individual Berths at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama Junior Golfers Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder were selected as individual competitors at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals, May 16-18. The Crimson Tide duo will play at the Traditions Club golf course in Bryan, Texas.

Claycomb and Ponder, who earned the No. 1 and No. 2 individual seeds in the regional, are two of 10 who were selected to compete over the three-day 54-hole event. The top individual not on an advancing team will qualify to compete at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships which will be played May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

  • Ranked 71st in the Nation, according to’s individual rankings
  • Was in the starting lineup for all nine of the Crimson Tide events on the season
  • Leads the team in scoring average (70.92) and average vs. par (-0.21), as well as rounds of par or better (15) and rounds in the 60s (9)
  • Captured his first Collegiate medalist honors at the spring season-opening Watersound Invitational with a 54-hole total of 14-under par 202
  • Opened the spring season with six consecutive rounds in the 60s – the longest stretch of his career and now since Justin Thomas had five straight in Spring of 2012
  • Ranked 106th in the Nation, according to’s individual rankings
  • Leads Alabama with five top-20 finishes and two top-10 results across the eight stroke-play events of the year, including a season-best fifth-place result at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup
  • Ranks second for UA in stroke average (71.38), average vs. par (+0.25), rounds in the 60s (8) and rounds of par or better (11)
  • Tied for the team lead in rounds counted at 91.7 percent (22 of his 24 total rounds counted towards the team total)
  • The Tide’s top finisher in four of the team’s eight stroke-play events to lead Alabama
